Inspired by Home Improvement Shows
Yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle had a funny reader-response column called "On Home Improvement Shows: Have You Ever Been Inspired By One?". There are a number of cute responses -- people who've been bitten by the home improvement bug to varying degrees -- but I think this one was my favorite (added emphasis is mine):
“I was watching 'Oprah' and they had this really cute guy named Nate redoing a studio apartment. He was talking about ways to make a small room (look) big. I was inspired to change my system (for) storage and did it for about a week. Then I got lazy with the project and quit.”
On most of these decorating/design shows, for better or worse, things generally work out. (By which I mean, the project usually gets done; it's not always pretty.) But I think there are a lot of people like the one quoted above who get excited by the project at first and jump in with both feet, but then either get bored or frustrated and just quit. It'd be interesting to see a show about the aftermath of those projects; sort of a "train-wreck" interior design TV show.
