Furniture Designer Profile

Every week, the San Francisco Chronicle's Home & Garden section does a feature on an up-and-coming designer making their mark on the Bay Area design scene. This week's feature ("Curves Define Furniture Designer's Art and Life") profiles furniture designer Jeanice Skvaril and her creations, which include her "Slice Rocker" (modeled after a canteloupe slice) and "Martini Love" (an armchair that looks like it sounds). There are some good photos of her work with the article.

Interestingly, she didn't start as a furniture designer, but began her career in product design, later moving into graphic design/art, and then getting her postgraduate degree in furniture design. Her work already has a reputation for breaking the mold, matching a clean aesthetic with bold designs:

“Skvaril assigns as much weight to the ergonomics and experience of using her furniture as she does to its look. The result is an amalgamation of comfort and chic. 'Every time I approach a new piece, I ask myself: What am I doing new? What material, technique or form can I explore in a way that I've not yet seen?'”

Sounds like a good approach to bear in mind no matter what type of design you're practicing; keep that balance between function and style.
