Lenny Kravitz by Design

by Wendy Croix

Though the website for Lenny Kravitz's commercial interior design firm has yet to be - well - designed, the firm's gone public with an announcement on the Kravitz homepage. This fact should say something to would-be interior designers. An artist can parlay creative success in one field into a career in another. Creativity is portable - artistry is key.

Journalist Rick Marin notes the lure of design for "male sex symbols." Brad Pitt's love for architecture is well known, but less well known is his Vegas hotel venture with fellow hunk George Clooney. Nor are young actors immune to the lure of design. Hayden Christensen claims he's willing to give up "Star Wars" for architecture. In this context, Lenny Kravitz's interior design venture looks more mainstream than cutting edge.

Kravitz No Stranger to Residential Interior Design

Though he's untrained in either residential or commercial interior design, Kravitz's new design firm plans to boldly go in both of these design directions. The singer, whose own home interior design has garnered the interest of such notable glossies as Vogue, Interior Design, and Harpers Bazaar, knew he was onto something when friends began asking him to design their home interiors, too. Kravitz calls himself a "consultant" rather than a designer, but he's been sharing his retro, "classic," and eclectic tastes for years.

Commercial Interior Designs Ahead for Lenny Kravitz

The decision to turn from strictly residential designs for friends to larger commercial interior design ventures appears to have motivated Kravitz to launch his design enterprise. Once he'd turned from designing home interiors to designing a penthouse recording studio, hotel designs followed. Kravitz and his two business partners in the firm, called simply Kravitz Design, also created a chandelier in blackened chrome surrounding amber, jet, and clear crystal strands for Swarovski's fourth Crystal Palace Collection. Could the subtext of the piece be "a star is reborn"?
