Okay. You're not going to plot out the precise center of your latest home interior design project and hang a crystal there -- you left your compass at home. Your interior design choices don't accommodate a feng shui color scheme that dictates deep blue for the northeast corner of the room or a bagua mirror on the front door. And what's with all that red and black?

Interior design with feng shui principles in mind doesn't mean clinging to archaic rules about the connection between red and money. Feng shui's core wisdoms remind us of the design principles that make today's interiors user friendly, including:

Design for a clutter-free interior.

Since having lots of places to put stuff nips clutter in the bud, an interior must be designed to be junk-free in the first place. In short, the fewer a room's closets, the more numerous should be its drawers.

Use crack- and chip-free home interior design

Favorite "forever items" that have seen better days are feng shui interior design no-nos. As a designer, it's your duty to counsel your clients to have a let-go-and-move-on attitude towards furnishings that have seen better days. "Restore it or throw it out" should be your mantra.

Design with interior light in mind

Ancient feng shui meets contemporary green design in this last helpful principle. Designing to maximize the use of natural light in each an every room lowers energy costs and creates bright, peaceful spaces.

You'll compromise nothing by honoring these three feng shui tips for interior design. In fact, you'll find yourself creating environments that are easy to live in, spaces whose occupants can go with the flow that you've cleverly built into their lives. Now that's design wisdom.
