Designing and organizing storage space can be one of the most challenging interior design jobs in your home. You can make the most of your storage space by following a few interior design programs and principles.
Assess your Available Storage
Before embarking upon the interior design job of restructuring your home’s storage, you need to know exactly what you have to work with. Take a clipboard, measuring tape, and pencil on a tour through your home. Make a rough sketch of each room, making sure to list, place, and measure every storage space. Be sure to include your garage, basement, and any outdoor sheds in your storage inventory. If you have access to an interior design or CAD program, you can lay out each storage space precisely. While you still have the layout of the house and the measurements easy at hand, input this information into the interior design program. This will give you a virtual snapshot of your home’s storage spaces.
Assess your Stuff
Take another tour of your home’s storage spaces. Keep that clipboard with you and make a list of the items that are stored in each closet, cupboard, and storage room. While you are doing this interior design storage job, evaluate the placement of your stuff. Often when moving in there is a rush to get things put away and we don’t do the best interior design storage job. Also make note of any thoughts you have had as you worked in or with your storage spaces. For example, have you often cursed the fact that your spice cupboard is so much trouble to navigate that you often don’t bother? This sort of information is invaluable.
Once you have this information you are ready for the fun part of any interior design job: shopping.
