Imagine your kitchen with a scenic view of the French countryside. Or would you prefer a view of palm trees blowing gently in the breeze off the coast of Maui? No matter where your favorite place is, you can bring a piece of that world into yours with the interior decorating art of trompe l'oeil.

Whether for holidays, parties, dinner, or homework, everyone eventually ends up in the kitchen. So why not make your kitchen reflect your unique sense of style and personality by customizing your kitchen design with a unique interior decorating technique called trompe l'oeil.

Trompe L'oeil - Bringing the View Indoors

The art of trompe l'oeil, (pronounced tromp loi), has been around for centuries. A French phrase meaning 'to trick the eye', trompe l'oeil is a mural designed to mimic an exterior view. By bringing a touch of the outdoors to the interior decorating of your kitchen, you can take an ordinary room and make it a showpiece.

If you love the ocean, a scenic view of your favorite coastline combined with some bleached oak, marine blues, and whites can transport you to your favorite beach. For those of you with a passion for the mountains, a trompe l'oeil window with a view your favorite mountain range and some rustic furniture can bring the scent of pine trees to mind every time you step into the kitchen. Do memories of your trip to Italy make you smile every time they come to mind? Try adding a false Roman archway that frames a view of that tiny Italian village you loved.

No matter what view you choose, bringing the exterior to the interior design of your kitchen is a terrific way to take your interior decorating to a whole new level. Interior design school will show you how to do it right!
