Becoming an interior decorator can be a fulfilling and even lucrative career, as long as you start in the right place. Taking some interior decorating classes can point your career in the right direction.

What an Interior Decorator Does

Interior decorating can provide a good alternative to interior design by focusing mostly on furnishing and surface treatments and less on architecture and design. Earning your interior design license is still a good idea if you want to work in interior decorating.

Most interior decorators are independent consultants, starting with a small client base and growing it over time. Taking some interior decorating classes is a great way to build the skill set you need to give clients the expertise they are looking for. Presenting yourself professionally, knowing the basics about color use, material sourcing, and hiring contractors is essential in order to build client rapport. Interior decorating classes can help you gain this.

Taking Interior Decorating Classes

Interior decorating classes can be found in most cities, but they are also available online, allowing you to earn a certificate while working a full-time job or managing family and other responsibilities.

Modern trends in interior decorating include the strategic use of color in a room by choosing objects and furnishings in bright colors as accents and not as the foundation for a space. Creating open space in a room is another trend, leaving "blank" spaces in a room and using simpler patterns, to increase the sense of space.

Learning about these trends is another benefit of interior decorating classes. Watching design shows and reading design magazines alone won't get you into the industry. Getting educated is the first step toward becoming an interior decorating professional.
