Interior design school, whether on-campus or online, should offer students courses that build backgrounds in both basic and advanced design concepts, the creation of a portfolio, and the chance to network with other designers and instructors. One school goes even further by offering a brand new building and courses that make sense for future independent designers.

Most aspiring interior designers know a degree is essential to their career. What they may not know is the amount of benefits awaiting them there. One school redevelopment is a good example.

An Auspicious (Re)Design

When the interior design firm Lor Calma Design won the bid for the redesign of Saint Benilde's School of Design and Arts in the Philippines, construction began quietly. But the group made several bold statements throughout its development, including the design of every building element from scratch. The design focused primarily on light, creating as much opportunity for natural light exposure as possible.

Reviewers of the design school's new building call it an educational tool in itself. Others say it reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the education students receive there.

The Business of Design

The Saint Benilde's School of Design and Arts decided to redesign its curriculum, too, adding many entrepreneur and business management classes to its interior design degree program. Since so many interior designers work independently (around 30%, says the US Bureau of Labor Statistics), business ownership skills can be very beneficial to an interior design career. Some educators think that "business know-how" is just as important as creativity throughout one's career.

These and other courses make an interior design degree a good career asset, especially for new designers without experience.
