The next person who taps me on the shoulder at a party and tells me about their "natural" interior decorating skills may suffer an explosion of pent up frustration. Interior decorating is not as complex as brain surgery, but it takes more than good intentions to do a professional job.
How can you tell the amateurs from the pros?
Interior decorating schools are an important part of the profession. They exist for a reason. Of course, the natural sense of color and design--and the enthusiasm of the amateur--may help you make your college dorm room look better. However, when it comes to professional interior decorating--the conception and execution of carefully thought out interior decorating plans--interior decorating schools are your friends. What about online interior design schools?
Well, I never said you had to go sit in some classroom somewhere to learn professional interior decorating. There are many ways to learn the craft, and online interior design schools are a wonderful choice. Most online interior design schools offer the same range of courses as other interior decorating schools. The online schools may have a number of ways of presenting you the material—books, fabric samples, and other learning aids may be sent by mail. You might attend classes and lectures that are broadcast live over the Internet, or you might have recorded online video sessions that you can watch at your own convenience. In the design profession, training matters.
A big difference between the online interior design schools and the interior decorating schools that are their brick-and-mortar counterparts is that the online schools tend to be more flexible. They are able to react quickly and to tailor their approach to the needs of the specific students. The interior decorating field is highly competitive. Whether your decision is to sit in a classroom or to study in your own home and at your own pace in one of the online interior design schools, the training is very necessary.
