Security is one of the most important issues to Americans today. With international and local threats greater than ever before, people are placing high priority on the safety of their homes and cities. Residential planners can play an essential role in designing safe houses and communities. With a degree in residential planning, you can specialize in building security, helping to secure people's effects and property while at the same time creating job security for yourself.
About Residential Planning
Residential planners study community design and urban planning. Residential planners may be qualified to design single housing lots, subdivisions with many homes, or they may specialize planning entire cities. Residential planners are experts in maximizing the efficiency and livability of home interiors, communities, and cities by improving their designs and layouts.Residential Planning and a Career in Building Security
Residential planners specializing in security may work in either residential or urban security. In residential areas, security from thieves and criminals is a priority for homeowners and tenants. Urban residential planners are more concerned with evacuation plans and the structural integrity of city buildings. Residential planners working on security in cities may have to consider escape routes from office buildings, contingency plans for man-made and natural disasters, and identification of safe havens. Examples of specific areas of work within the security subfield of residential planning include:- Construction site emergency response guidelines
- Technology and security design
- Codes, standards, and security guidelines
- Historic preservation security guidelines
- Home and business disaster planning, response, and recovery
- Emergency management and facility procedures
- Protective structural design
- Mechanical, electrical, and fire protection design
